‘Rock of Ages’

Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety.

  • Psalm 31:3

For as long as I can remember, rocks have been treasures in my life. As a child, I gathered them in little buckets and sorted them according to color and size. They gave me hours of comfort and delight. Although a tiny pebble doesn’t seem to have much refuge power, it is healthy to realize that we can find refuge not only in that which is big and strong, but also in the small and delightful. How easily I return to my childhood, remembering God, my rock: every stone, a pebble of delight.

In this psalm, we are asking God to be our safe place, our guidance and comfort in times of trial. How have you experienced God as a sheltering rock of presence?
