‘Suffering, Yet Strong’
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.
- Galatians 6:17
What makes us strong? Natural aspects of personality, undoubtedly, but circumstances do have something to do with it as well. After my husband died suddenly at the age of 50, over ten years ago, I found myself looking at life differently in many ways. Over time, one of those ways, it was clear, was a position of greater strength. After all I’d been through, what else could hurt me? Paul is speaking of something different here, but perhaps we can still see a connection. In communion with Jesus, we are in communion with his wounds and suffering. But it doesn’t end there, does it? For his wounds are rooted in love and point to eternal life. By holding on to him and accepting that suffering, love and hope in a healthy way, I’m changed. I’m strong.
Jesus, I look to you for strength in the face of today’s challenges.
