‘More or Less’
Throw into the river every boy that is born to the Hebrews…
- Exodus 1:22
Violence has been with the human race for eons. Today’s Exodus story tells of a fearful ruler who oppressed his subjects and destroyed his enemies in order to remain in power. His malice includes murdering infant boys. When I consider how cruelly human beings treat one another, I recall that every human being holds the possibility of acting lovingly or hatefully. Depending on each person’s daily choices, violence either increases or recedes. We might not be torturing and killing people, but we can still act cruelly by such things as hardening our minds with hateful thoughts, spreading malicious gossip, deliberately choosing to break communication by our silent treatment of someone, or using disparaging, racial terms. Each harsh, negative approach we extend to another person contributes to the cruelty pervading society. Likewise, each positive, loving action we choose to do lessens the violence that life contains.
