DAILY DEVOTIONS: Jul 16 ‘Five-Star Rating?’

‘Five-Star Rating?’

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

…it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.

  • Matthew 11:24

Our society is completely enamored with comparisons. Apps on our phones allow us to rate everything from restaurants to plumbers. Facebook users can “like” and “tag” and “comment” all day and night if they so choose. Nearly every purchase comes with an opportunity for “feedback” from the customer.

While I know that it’s wrong, I have often rated myself saying, “At least I’m not as bad as that guy!” That may be true or false, but it’s not the point. In today’s gospel, Jesus is giving us, not so much a rating, as the message that we are obligated to live according to what we have been told and understand.

As Christians, we know that God loves us. We know that Jesus lives in every person (even that guy!). As such, we are responsible for our actions and will be held accountable “on the day of judgment.” Yet we also know that we can trust in God’s mercy when we stray, as long as we are truly repentant.
