‘By Our Love’
I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice…
- Matthew 12:6-7
Jesus dismisses the Pharisees’ accusation that his disciples have broken the Sabbath law. He turns their argument upside down by accusing the priests of working on the Sabbath. Jesus has a habit of turning things upside down. For starters, the Son of God has come to serve God’s children, not to be served. The law he cares about most of all demands we, too, serve others and act with mercy, despite all costs. Jesus makes it clear that God’s laws are not constrictive but freeing. We are not to be slaves to petty thinking or to be burdened with our own selfish need to win. When we love without measure and forgive without blame, God’s love is magnified through our merciful service to others.
By our love, as disciples of Jesus, may all come to know the glory of God and the peace of Jesus Christ.
