‘Cutting the Cord’
Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain…
- Hebrews 12:11
When I was a young father, I had a pair of stereo speakers on either side of our fireplace in the living room. The cord connecting the two was a little short for the span, so it was suspended across the fireplace about two feet in the air. One December day, I saw that the cord was cut in two. My eldest son, still a preschooler, had somehow found a pair of scissors and snipped the speaker wire.
I approached him and angrily said, “Why did you do that!!?” With tears in his eyes, his lips quavering, he stared up at me and, barely able to reply, said, “But Daddy, I didn’t want Santa to trip!”
Instantly, my anger dissolved and my heart melted. I picked him up and hugged him close. Over the next several years, he was, in fact, disciplined as needed–as were his siblings. But my wife and I always tried to do so, not with anger, but with love, as does God.
