DAILY DEVOTIONS:Sep 18 ‘Underneath the Sinful Rubble’

‘Underneath the Sinful Rubble’

But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.

  • Luke 7:35

A woman, who had stopped practicing her faith, complained to me about the place of women in the church. Finally, I asked her, “If the Church gave women all the things you are asking for, would you come back?” After a thoughtful moment, she admitted, “No. I stopped believing.”

In today’s gospel, John the Baptist is accused of being “possessed by a demon,” and Jesus is called “a glutton and a drunkard” (verses 33, 34). Both are rejected by the crowd. We all have our own ideas about the way God should run the world and the Church. Thus, we become disappointed at times, sometimes even unbelieving.

But there is a wisdom continually at work in this world. Even now, there is a kingdom being fashioned that will invariably achieve its end. John preached it. Jesus ushered it in. It’s there, underneath all the sinful rubble of this world. Can you see it?
