‘In the Right Place’
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
He is like a barren bush in the desert
that enjoys no change of season,
But stands in a lava waste,
a salt and empty earth.
- Jeremiah 17:6
I once visited a lava waste on a volcanic island that, while beautiful and attractive in its own way, left me yearning for something different–for green plants growing in healthy soil and cool running water that refreshes and renews everything it touches. When we separate ourselves from God, whether by intention or inattention, we place ourselves in just such a dangerous situation. This new landscape may seem attractive and alluring for a while, but it can never sustain us, can never refresh and renew us the way only the presence of God can. We must be aware of the place where we stand and live.
Ever-sustaining God, find me in your presence today. - Steve Givens
