‘Rock Steady but Changing’
The Chair of St. Peter
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
- Matthew 16:18
I do not know many people who are comfortable with change. It seems that most people I have met find security in routine and a minimum of surprises. To a great extent, those traits are necessary for a smooth and orderly sail through life. This is why the Church has long been a beacon for those times when we go through turbulent seas. Saint Peter symbolizes the rocklike nature of the Church: solid, enduring and, to some extent, unchanging. But the Church is also a gathering of men and women who are called to follow the Spirit as it leads them through the shifting tides of time, history and cultures. And this, of course, means change–a leaving of ways of living, a thinking of the new and, at times, startling. It is God’s way of growth. It is, therefore, also ours. - Fr.
