‘Life-giving Water’
He is like a tree
planted near running water…
- Psalm 1:3
Deep water. Eternal water. Today’s psalm reading comes from the first part of the first psalm. Whoever compiled the collection of ancient hymns we call The Book of Psalms, this is how they chose to begin: describing the person who lives in alignment with God as being like a tree planted near running water–water that is always fresh and will never run out. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst” (John 4:13-14). Bring rooted in this ever-flowing water is different from just satisfying thirst; it is tapping the eternal. In his Testament, St. Ignatius describes a seismic spiritual shift prompted by spending time by a “stream which was running deep.” This deep, abundant, eternal, life-giving running water is our promise when we align with God. - Phil Fox Rose
