Seventy Weeks are Determined Part II – (Daniel 9:24-27)
Bible Verse(s)
Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.
And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.
Reading Notes
As we continue with Daniel’s prophecy of the seventy weeks, one of the first things we notice is that God has given us a very precise time frame in which He will finish His plan of redemption for mankind. The next thing we notice is the Bible doesn’t just say seventy weeks? Why are the weeks broken up into the pattern we see in this section of scripture? Which is seven weeks of years, followed by sixty-two weeks of years. Which only comes to sixty-nine weeks of years. Where is the last remaining week of years? We have to understand when we see descriptions like this God has a good reason for them. They are not random, but rather they reveal significance historically, Biblically and prophetically.
In addition, they provide information that can help us better understand the Bible and God’s plan of redemption. So as we look at the breaks between these weeks of years we understand God has revealed this in His word because it has significance to God’s timing. These groups of years indicate gaps between blocks of years where something significant happens as it relates to God’s plan of redemption, the return of Christ and the fulfillment of prophecy, thus they help to fulfill God’s promises, made to us through His word. In the next devotion we’ll get into why this grouping is so important, as well as what happens between the blocks of years and what this has to do with the coming Tribulation period.
