Seventy Weeks are Determined Part III – (Daniel 9:24-27)
Bible Verse(s)
Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.
And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.
Reading Notes
As we look closer into the pattern of weeks making up the prophecy of the seventy weeks or seventy groups of seven years given to Daniel. We see it’s broken into three groups of weeks. The first group consists of seven weeks. Followed by sixty-two weeks of years. Followed by a single week later in the passage. These groups of years indicate blocks of years separated by important events fulfilling God’s promises.
The first group of seven weeks or forty-nine years correlates to the first portion of the prophecy. This is where the command was given to rebuild the city, even in troublesome times. This corresponds to the book of Nehemiah and the command came on March 5th, 444 B.C. When the Persian king Artaxerxes gave the order to rebuild the city. It took exactly forty-nine years and was completed in 396 B.C., bringing us to the end of the book of Malachi.
The second group of sixty-two weeks or four hundred and thirty-four more years was to make an end of sin and reconcile iniquity. That gives us 483 years from the time the order was given to rebuild the city (which is 49 years, first group of seven + 434 sixty-two sevens = 483 years). This takes us from March 5th, 444 B.C. to March 30th 33 A.D. the day Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem with the people shouting hosanna which began the Passover week. The prophecy tells us after sixty-nine (seven plus the sixty-two) weeks of years the Messiah will be cut off.
This is exactly what happened with Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, which effectively stopped the prophetic time clock with one week or one group seven years remaining. This finishes up the third part of these prophecies next we’ll get into the details surrounding the final week concluding this section of scripture.
